Little Athletics training

Little Athletics back tomorrow Tuesday 31st January for one week only.
Ratoath College Hall 6.15pm - 7.00pm: athletes born 2007 & 2006
7.00pm - 7.45pm: athletes born 2005 & 2004
Due to unavailability of hall there will be no training for little athletics Tuesday 7th or 14th February.
Training will resume in full Tuesday 21st February.

Training times update

Ratoath College Hall 6.15pm - 7.00pm: athletes born 2007 & 2006
7.00pm - 7.45pm: athletes born 2005 & 2004

Track 6.30pm - 7.30pm: athletes born 2004, 2003, 2002
7.30pm - 8.30pm: athletes born 2001, 2000

There is a cross over in training for athletes born 2004. These athletes have the option to either train in the hall or on the track depending on the individual and parents wishes. If athletes wish to participate in competition this year it will be more beneficial to train on the track and they can prepare properly for competition. Parents must decide and let us know by 31st January if their children are opting to train in the hall or on the track as we need to allocate coaches as required and free up spaces for new children to join little athletics in the hall.

(Siblings Only) Due to the change in training times, parents may choose one of the training times for all of their children to train in, at the same time. Children may not change out of their correct age group to be in a different group because of their friends etc. This option is for siblings only. (note: please ensure your child is capable and suited to the time slot you choose).
Children born in or after the year 2005 are not accepted for training on the track unless their parent is actively involved in coaching on the track.

Leinster Indoors

Our own coach Peter Doherty had a good day winning the Masters M1, 60m, 200m and 400m. He also got a PB in the 60m of 7.6s and 400m in 55.9s. There was a huge crowd there due to the Juvenile relays (U12 to U19), and this made for a great atmosphere, we should definitely target this event next year for our juvenile members.

Cushinstown AC indoors

We had 15 athletes in Cushinstown yesterday. The full results were as follows: Kevin Dat Conway 3rd in long jump and 30m u11, Orla Byrne 3rd in Long Jump and 2nd in 30m u11, Aine Foster 3rd in 30m u11, Aimee Doherty 1st in 30m u9, Pierse Butler 2nd u14 60m, Cormac Butler 3rd in u14 long jump, Conor Sheeran 3rd in 30m u13. Some new faces were there which was great to see - all enjoyed the day.

Mickey Ruben coaching course

On Saturday, I was lucky enough to be able to take part in this one day coaching course. Mickey Ruben is Usain Bolt's Strength and Conditioning coach and is also a Physio in his own right and used to compete in Decathlons.
There were about 70 people there, mainly coaches and runners, but also some footballers and martial artists.
The day started with core exercises. This is a pic of one that was recommended. The athlete is holding two dumbbells (weight not important) and the arms kept wide while staying in that position for 20-30secs.
Next we moved on to get a demonstration of the "jack-knife" abs workout - looked tough!
Then we moved on to mobility work, and used some hurdles. The volunteers had to hold the hurdle with both hands and make their way over each one in turn. It's all about getting the hips in the air - which in turn helps with sprints.
This is an "action shot" of the same hip movement applied to sprint starts:
After lunch (which was included in the price), we moved outside to the all weather track for some fine tuning of sprint starts and setting up in the blocks (no pics I'm afraid). Then it was back inside for discussions on warmups, cool downs, shot putt, javelin and a Q & A session.
It was a really packed and worthwhile course and one I'd highly recommend. Many thanks to Carlow AC for hosting the event!

Leinster Juvenile Relays and Masters Indoors Review

A spirited display against very tough opposition saw our Under 14 team of Peter Kilgannon, Philip Marron, Alex Hunter and Eoin Clayton, come in 5th out of 10 in todays Leinster Cross Country Relays. They were convincing winners of the Meath Cross Country Relays and the move up to In competition was great experience for them. Well done to them and we'll be looking forward to the track season ahead.

Peter Doherty represented Ratoath in the All Ireland Masters today returning with 2 Bronze medals for his great effort. In a blistering 60m final won in a time of 7.32s by Kevin Cogley (Menapians AC) equaling the current irish M35 masters record, with Micheal Downey (West Waterford AC) 2nd 7.37s, Peter came in 3rd with 7.7s just outside his heat time of 7.64s.
In the 200m it came down to thousands of a sec to seperate Micheal Downey 2nd in 25.2s from Peter 3rd in 25.2s but the clear winner was again Kevin Cogley with a new M35 Irish Masters record of 24.05s.
This will make for a very interesting masters outdoor track season in this category especially if Colm Keogh (Ratoath AC) last years winner throws his hat into the ring this summer.

Special well done to Tom O'Connor (Liffey Vally AC) local bank manager and helper in the club who won a great double Gold in the 1500m and 3000m today in the M50 category.
