GloHealth National Schools Champs

The GloHealth national schools championships were held today (30th May) in Tullamore, Conditions were cold, damp and blustery but nevertheless there were some excellent performances from Ratoath A/C athletes representing their schools.

Philip Marron won the intermediate boys 1500m steeplechase in a new club record of 4 min 31.25 sec. He made a break early on and was never headed thereafter and looked like he had a few more gears in reserve if needed. His next race will be the Tailteann games which also serves as a trial for the Irish team to compete in the schools international scheduled for mid July in Glasgow.

Ivie Okome was another to win gold when she ran a very impressive last leg in the minor girls 4 x 100m relay for Mount Sackville.

Matthew Buckley was most unfortunate in the minor boys 100m in that he pulled up after 5 m thinking there had been a recall but still managed to recover to take third in a time of 11.92 sec.

Deirdre Healy took the bronze (4 min 56.85 sec)  in what turned out to be a very tactical senior girls 1500m with Nadia Power and Cliona Murphy. Deirdre is using these 1500m races to hone her speed and will surely benefit from this when she moves back up to her favoured 3K .

Darragh Casey and Raphael McCaffrey both competed in the minor boys long jump and while they did not make the top 6, they will have gained from the experience of competing in their first All Ireland and their day will surely come.

Record Haul of Medals at Leinster Relay Championships

The Leinster juvenile and junior sprint relay championships took place last Saturday at Charlesland; Greystones in what were perfect weather conditions for sprinting. We had 13 teams entered for this event and with some exceptional performances from all of our athletes we brought home a haul of 10 medals on the day doubling our previous best of 5 medals in 2013. Our u9 boys and girls kicked off proceedings with the girls qualifying for the final where they finished 5th in a very competitive race, well done to Isabel Wallace, Katie Doherty, Erin Lesson and Amelia Holland. Our u9 boys team of Gavin Witter, Fionn Heffernan, Charlie O’ Connor and Harry Bogan began the medal rush taking bronze in the boys final. We had two teams in the girls u11 event, our blue team Niamh Murray, Cara O’Sullivan, Caoimhe Fitzsimons and Amy Forde placed 4th in their heat but did not qualify for the final, our Yellow team of Laura Kelly, Sophie Quinn, Sophie Green and Aobh Forde finished 2nd in their heat in a close contest with KCH, but the girls pulled out a top drawer performance in the final to take the title in another close race with KCH.
Our u13 teams were up next and both boys and girls teams qualified for the final, Our u13 boys team of Kyle Witter, Oisin Kelly, Fionn Drummond and Tom Kilgannon battled all the way in the final finishing 5th, Our u13 girls team were up against it from a very strong Tullamore Harriers team, our girls ran a great final and were narrowly beaten into 2nd place. Well done to Aimee Doherty, Emma O’Connell, Aoife Rutherford, Ella Healy and Lili O’ Connor. The u15 girls as usual put in another great performance with a powerful run from Aine Cooney to bring the girls into 2nd in the final, the girls ran another senior club record of 52.10s, an exceptional time for 14 years old girls, congratulations to Aine Cooney, Emma Coroner, Ivie Okome, Maria Rogers and Lara Power. Our u15 boys team of Kevin Conway, Matthew Buckley, Daragh Casey and Fergal Kilgannon put in a terrific performance also with a great battle on the final leg, Fergal Kilgannon holding on for 3rd in a photo finish.
With 5 medals from the morning session we looked forward to the even age’s event in the afternoon. Our u10 girls team of  Ciara Coroner, Cara O’Sullivan, Caoimhe Fitzsimons and Niamh Murphy were first up finishing 2nd in their heat and with a great run in the final they placed  3rd to take our 6th medal of the day. Our u12 girls who were not expected to medal ran out of their skins winning their heat and finishing 3rd in the final, with a little more practice this team could do very well at Nationals, well done to Aimee Doherty, Sophie Quinn, Laura Kelly and Eno Okome. Our u14 girls just scraped into the final taking the last fastest loser spot, but that did not deter them and with a powerful run from lane one they finished 3rd in a blanket finish, this was one of our best performances of the day, great credit to Kate Smith, Lili O’Connor, Rachel McPartlin, Emma Coroner and Aoife Rutherford.
Our u14 boys’ team put in another great performance to claim our second Leinster title, after a comfortable win in their heat the lads put in a faultless display of baton changing and sprinting in their final to take the gold with a great anchor leg from Adam Quinn. Our 10th medal of the day came from our Junior men’s 4 x 400m team, the lads ran a new club record of 3:35 finishing 3rd with great running from Brian Kiernan, Ciaran McCarty, Daryn Browne and Philip Marron.
Thanks to all athletes and parents who made the trip to Greystones and we look forward to more success at Nationals in June and July.

Superb 3k Run by Deirdre Healy

Running in the Irish Milers track meet in Belfast this evening, Deirdre Healy finished  a superb second in the 3,000m. Deirdre took 23 sec off her own PB to record 10mins 06 sec and once again set a new club record for this event. The opening lap was 71 sec but Deirdre stayed off the early hot pace and gradually worked her way through the field to finish strongly and take second. Next up is the Schools All Ireland championships where she will contest the 1500m before siting her leaving certificate and we wish her the very best of luck in both.

Earlier in the day, Ciaran Crowther competed in the Leinster junior 3K championships in Greystones. After a tactical race, Ciaran won an exciting bunch sprint for second and recorded a new PB of 9 min 47 sec. In the right race, Ciaran has the talent to run 9 min 30 and will surely do so sooner rather than later.

Conor Duncan 5th in Glohealth AAI Games

Conor Duncan produced another excellent performance today when competing  in the GloHealth AAI games at the Morton Stadium, Santry. Conor hung back off the opening lap of 54 sec to eventually finished 5th in 1 min 57.5 sec behind the very imprssive winner, Harry Purcell. This is yet again another new PB for Conor's and is his third sub 2 mins for the 800m in a matter of weeks. It is just reward for all the tough training sessions he consistently put in over the winter months and with a little bit of luck, there is even better to come from him

Day 2 of Leinster Schools Athletics

Day 2 of the Leinster schools athletics was held in the Morton Stadium, Santry, today. The blustery wind was not condusive to fast times but both Brian Kiernan and Deirdre Healy made light of the demanding conditions.

Brian got off to a slow start in the intermediate boys 400m but finished like the proverbial train to get up for third in a magnificent new PB of 50.96 sec - just 0.14 behind the winner and 0.01 off second. The finish was so tight, nobody was sure who had won until the judges announcement was made.

Deirdre Healy took the field out hard in the senior ladies 1500m and led up to 1100m before Nadia Power put in a blistering last lap to win. Deirdre and Cliona Murphy battled it out all the way down the finishing straight with Deirdre finishing 3rd in 4 min 43.3 sec. Excellent running in the blustery conditions and especially having made all the early pace. It suggests Deirdre will run a very fast time when she moves back up to her favoured 3000m

Philip Marron Takes Leinster Schools Title

Philip Marron was the toast of Ratoath Community College  today when he won the intermediate boys Leinster schools 1500m steeplechase title  at the  Morton Stadium, Santry. Philip just got the better of fellow Meath man Jarlaith Jordan down the home straight to win in a new PB and club record of 4 mins 40.42 sec. This win was all the more impressive considering Philip has only recently returned to training after an injury. Alex Hunter was 5th in the same race in 4 min 55 sec.  Alex  hinself had only resumed training after a short enforced layoff. Ciaran Crowther did his school proud with an excellent 5th place in the 2000m senior steeplechase and improved his personal best to 6 min 46.79 sec. The intermediate girls 1500m s/chase was exceptionally fast from the gun but Aine O Connor gave it everything to finish just outside the medals in 4th place (5 mins 58 sec).

Matthew Buckley just missed out on the gold in the minor boys 100m while Aine Cooney was another to made it to the podium with an excellent third place finish in the junior girls 100m and recording a new pb of 12.67 sec and club record into the bargain.

Darragh Casey was a brilliant third in the minor boys long jump in a new PB of 5.10m and later went on to show his versatility and finish 6th in the 500m, running 1 min 19,7 sec. Karen Hayes improved her 800m by almost 4 seconds when finishing 7th  in 2 min 31 sec. and continues to get better with every race.

Emma Coroner was fourth in the minor girls long jump with a very consistent series culminating in a best of 4.61m
