Eamon Wallace set a new pb and
club record for the 400m when he finished second in the Irish University
Championships which were held at the Mardyke track in Cork last weekend. In a
close race in wet and windy conditions Eamon was beaten by Mark English, who
was a finalist in the World Junior Championships in 2012. Eamon’s time at the
weekend was 48.51s which broke the 400m club record which had stood for 42
years, the previous record was set by our former club chairman Ronnie Quigley,
Ronnie set the record in Gormanston at the North Eastern Regional Champions in
1971 on a cinder track with a time of 49.1s.
Eamon’s time was also just 2 tenths of a second outside the qualifying standard of 48.3s for the European Junior
Championships which take place this year in Italy in July. Eamon has until June
30th to make the qualifying time, and with more favourable weather
conditions he has a great chance of making the standard.
