Leinster Even Ages Cross Country Report

The Leinster even ages Cross Country Championships were held yesterday at Avondale House, Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow. The weather was not kind to the competitors who had to put up with very cold conditions and rain showers throughout the day. The course was also difficult with tough hills and difficult underfoot conditions.
We had eight Athletes from the Club competing, Karen Hayes and Shauna Coffey had a good run in the girls U 12 2000m finishing 27th and 51st respectively out of a field of 140 Athletes. Aine O’ Conor finished 18th in the girls u14 3000m and was fifth home on the Meath team who won the County team event. Alex Hunter put in another strong performance in the boys U14 3000m finishing 13th, and was 4th home for Meath who also took gold in the County team event. Cormac and Pierce Butler were also on the Meath boy’s u14 winning team. Ciaran McCarty was unlucky in the boys u16, 4000m after suffering a fall in the early stages of the race, he recovered to finish 32nd. Conor Duncan competed in the boy’s u18 6000m and was 6th man home on the Meath team who took 3rd position in the team event.
Congratulations to all Athletes who competed yesterday and we wish our Athletes the best of luck who qualified for the All Irelands which will be held on the 25th of November in Tattersalls. This will be a great occasion for our Athletes who have qualified, being able to compete in an All Ireland on their door step and we would encourage all of our members and especially our younger athletes to come along for the experience and to support our competing Athletes.

Meath Uneven Ages Cross Country Championships Report

The Meath uneven ages cross country was held yesterday in Dunboyne, we again had a great turnout from the club with 37 Athletes competing. Again thanks to all athletes and parents who made the short trip.

The early rain made the ground soft in places, but in general the course stood up to the test. The first race of the day was the girls U9 800m, Aimee Doherty led from the front and held on for a comfortable victory, Olivia Rutherford competing for the first time finished in the top ten with Molly Keane and Laura Smith not far behind, the girls were unlucky to finish outside the medals in the team event missing out on bronze by 2 points.
Next up was the U9 Boys; Fionn Drummond had another strong run finishing second and was followed home by Kyle Witter 6th, Adam Cameron 7th and Sean Phelan. The boys took home gold in the team event which was a great result considering that Kyle, Adam and Sean were competing in cross country for the first time.

We had 7 girls competing in the girls U11 1200m event, Aoife Rutherford, Ciara Coffey, Rachel McPartlin, Emma Coroner, Kate Smith, Amy McDonnell and Genevieve Sload. In a very strong field Aoife Rutherford running up a year ran a terrific race finishing 4th, Emma Coroner and Ciara Coffey also had a good run finishing in the top 20.
The boys U11 team consisted of Tom Kilgannon, Nathan O’ Connor, Rohan Wardick, Adam Carolan who were running up an age, and Matthew Buckley and Jed Walsh who were competing in cross country for the first time. The lads finished outside the medals in the team event but the experience will stand to them in future.

We had five girls in the girl’s u13 2000m race, Karen Hayes, Shauna Coffey, Rachel Doherty, Zara Kane and Lara Power. All of the girls were running up an age in this event and found the going tough, Karen Hayes had another good run finishing in the top ten.
Joe Doyle, John Redmond, Conor Sheeran and Harry Bailey competed in the Boys U13 2500m event, a tough distance for these lads who prefer the sprints, but all finished and ran well.

Aine O’ Connor competed in the girls u15 3000m, and had a very good run finishing 3rd, The boys U15 team took silver in the 3500m, Alex Hunter had another a very good run finishing 4th, with Peter Kilgannon 6th, Philip Marron 8th and Brian Kiernan close behind. Tomas Whitty and Ivan Mather competed in the boys U17 4500m.

We had 45 individual Athletes competing this year in the Meath Cross Country Championships over the two weekends; this was a massive increase on last year’s numbers with only 10 competing over the 2 days in 2011. Congratulations to all Athletes who competed over both days and to all Athletes who have qualified for the Leinster Championships.

Cross country is a tough event for juvenile athletes and your coaches will be picking athletes to compete whom they feel will be able for the challenge now.  In Dec 16 there will be the cross country relays, a team event where the distances will not be as long and way more athletes will be eligible to be picked. We had a great turn out on the relays last year and would hope for an even bigger number of teams to compete this December.

Return of Club Singlet’s

If anyone has a club singlet could they please return it at training tonight or on Thursday night. We are missing quite a number of singlets since the Meath athletics league and Meath Championships. We were short singlets last Sunday resulting in a lot of Athletes having to wear their own T Shirts. We would hope to have all singlets back for this Sunday Meath Cross Country Championship. Thank You.

A team of 28 Athletes travelled to Ballinacree on Sunday to compete in the Meath even ages Cross Country, it was great to get such a big turnout from the club and it is a credit to the athletes and parents who made the trip.
In perfect running conditions on the tough course at Ballinacree the Club had its most successful day in a good number of years, taking gold in the girls U10, boys U10, girls U12 and boys U14 team event. There was also some great individual performances from Aimee Doherty who claimed bronze in the girls U10 event, Ciaran Mc Carty who took gold in the boys U16, Alex Hunter who had a great run finishing 4th in the boys U14 and Conor Duncan who finished 4th in the boys U18 event.

Karen Hayes had another good run in the Girls U12 race finishing  4th in only her second competitive race and was followed home closely by Shauna Coffey 7th, Rachel Doherty, Ivie Okome and Zara Kane.
Aine O’Connor had a good run in the girls U14 race finishing 6th in a very strong field, Brian Kiernan had a great run also for his first time out finishing 7th in the boys U14 race.

Congratulations to all the Athletes who competed and we look forward to the Meath un-even ages cross country championships which will be held in Dunboyne next Sunday the 14th.
