2015 International Mountain Running Youth Cup

The 2015 international mountain running youth cup took place in Smolyan, Bulgaria on 27th June. Ireland had teams in both the girls and boys events. Seventeen teams were represented in the boys race.  Our own Alex Hunter, despite getting a severe stitch on the second of three circuits, again wore the green singlet with pride as he was second Irishman home in 40th. Competition was red hot and the Italian winner of the event is also the current European cross country ski champion.

Well done Alex. Hopefully there will be many more international vests to come in the years ahead

Treble for Matthew at Leinster Championships

The Leinster u 14 to u 19 juvenile championships were held in Tullamore last weekend with the club well represented as over a dozen athletes competed in various events.

Matthew Buckley had a fantastic treble, winning gold in the u 14 75m H, 200m and 80m sprint. The 200m and 80m  were won in  new championship records of 24.25 sec and  9.72 sec. respectively.

Brian Kiernan won his first individual Leinster title with an impressive display in the u 17 400m (52.67 sec) less than 24 hours after taking the bronze in the Tailteann games over the same distance. Emma Coroner  was disappointed to just miss out on a medal in the u 14 75m H but in the style of a true champion she bounced back the next day to take bronze in the 80m sprint.  Ivie Okome, Maria Rogers and Aine Cooney had excellent runs over the weekend but unfortunately did not make the podium. Aine however, had the satisfaction of running a new club senior record of 27.34 sec in the 200m

Daragh Casey was fifth in the 200m on Saturday but in his specialist event on Sunday, finished 3rd in the u 15 long jump with 4.90m. Ciaran Crowther ran another impressive PB of 9 min 31.66  when taking third in the u 18 3k while Philip Marron was also third in a tactical u 18 1500m in 4 min 14 sec. Both Adam Quinn and Karen Hayes put in strong performances in their respective 800m races but were out of the medals

Tailteann Games 19 June Morton Stadium

The Tailteaan Games were held in Santry today (19th June). Ratoath Community School had two athletes running in the Leinster colours as they competed for the Tailteaan title. With places also up for grabs on the Irish schools team to compete in Galgow in mid July, every event was keenly contested.

Philip Marron continued his unbeaten run in the 1500m steeplechase with another faultless performance over the barriers and took the title in 4 min 31.8 sec which was just a fraction outside his personal best.

Brian Kiernan also caught the eye with his trademark strong finish to get up for third right on the line in 51.5 sec. This is Brian's first season running the 400m and he has made  huge progress in what is a very demanding event. Later on in the afternoon, Brian had the satisfaction of anchoring the winning Leinster team in the 4 x 400m relay in a time of 3 min 25 sec. Brian's leg was timed at 50.88 sec

Fingers crossed that both lads get selected on the Irish schools international team

Leinster Team Event

The Leinster team event was held last Monday in Tullamore, We had 4 teams competing from the club and all teams came away with medals, Our u9 boys didn’t have much luck on the day but still managed to finish 3rd, well done to Fionn Heffernan, Gavin Witter, Charlie O’ Connor and James Kelly. Our u10 girls were in great form and won their first Leinster title with a terrific all round team effort from Cara O’ Sullivan, Ciara Coroner, Caoimhe Fitzsimons and Eline Lund. The u11 girls only missed out on the gold by 1 point with great track and field performances from Niamh Murray, Sophie Quinn, Laura Kelly, Aishling Strafford and Sophie Green. The u13 girls also took gold, however a late change to the relay rules and points allocation after presentation suggested that they finished 2nd, the girls were already well down the road and were happy to take home their gold medals.
Well done to all athletes and thanks to parents who gave up their bank holiday Monday for this event.

Leinster Senior & Masters Championships

Strong winds in Tullamore last Sunday made conditions tough for those competing the the Leinster track & field championships.

Conor Duncan timed his effort to perfection in the senior 800m and won in 1 min 59.65 sec. This is Conor's first Leinster senior title in what has been a great track season for him so far. Siobheal Murray also won gold in her specialist HJ event with a height of 1 .45m and then went on to take the silver in the long jump (3.67m) . Ciaran Crowther was 7th in the senior mens 1500m.
