Sophie Quinn 2nd in AAU Championships
Sophie Quinn was second in the AAU u 12 800m championships in Florida last Tuesday (12th July). Her time of 2 min 26 sec was all the more remarkeable as she had only arrived in Florida the night before and temperatures at race time were in the mid 30´s. Sophie moved up from 9th at the bell to put in an exceptionally fast last lap to take silver.

Day 1 national juveniles and relays
Day 1 of the national juvenile and relay championships proved very successful for Ratoath a/c athletes. Our u 12 girls 4 x 100m relay squad of Aobh Forde, Caoimhe Fitzsimons, Aisling Stratford and Laura Kelly got things off to a great start with a fabulous bronze in a time of 58.98 sec. Next up were the u 19 4 x 400m quartet of Peter Kilgannon, Philip Marron, Naoise McKenna and Brian Kiernan who also had the distinction of setting a new club junior and senior record of 3 min 34.23 sec when finishing second.
Lili O Connor ran an excellent pb of 12.9 sec when taking bronze in the hurdles. Great to see an athlete rewarded for all the hard work Lili puts in on the technical side of her event. In the u 12 girls 600m, Sophie Quinn ran 1 min 43.9 while Karen Hayes gave it everything in the u 16 800m but finished out of the medals.
Laura Kelly has been steadily improving all season and she saved the best for the nationals with a wonderful new pb of 1.33m in the girls u 12 high jump to take the gold. Alex Hunter also had a day to remember - he won the u 18 3k steeplechase in a new club junior and senior record of 9 min 59 sec and was subsequently selected on the Irish team for the Celtic international in Wales on 6th August.
Well done to all athletes , officials and their parents who supported them over two long days of competition.
