Star of the Sea AC Cross Country race this Sunday

Our first cross country race which our club will participate in this year will be held this Sunday morning at 11am. Children do not have to be a member of a club to participate so if you have other children with you on the day they can compete if interested.
Cost €3 for juveniles - (3 athletes per team)

Meeting at track at 9.30am Sunday morning and last car will pull out 9.45am at the latest. See below for directions and details of cross country races.

For new comers not used to cross country events: Wear running spikes if you have them or old flat runners. If the course is mucky it can be slippy running in runners. Some athletes will run barefoot as they will have a better grip. (However, keep in mind their little feet can be cold and may get spiked by other kids if huddled together).

Ensure athletes warm up well. Keep warm before their race. Wear hats/gloves/rain jackets and legs if they have them. Don’t strip off too soon before the race.

For the race wear:
Take off all layers and hats etc for the race as they will not be comfortable running in jumpers/jackets or heavy track suit bottoms.
Recommend wearing: Long sleeve Base layer top under our club singlet with either shorts or running tights, socks and spikes.

If it’s raining they will get wet and mucky but that’s all part of the fun.
Bring full change of clothes and jacket and dry socks and runners to go home in. Make sure the kids don’t put their dry socks/runners on to go back into a mucky wet field. Bring extra dry socks/shoes.

If it’s a lovely warm day all the better but prepare for the worst and they will enjoy the day. However, if the weather is bad don’t be put off. The children will have a great time running in the rain and hopefully lots of muck and if they have nice dry clothes to go home in they will be great.
They are a better opportunity to win medals as the first 6 home get a medal and first three teams so our teams will be very important for cross country running. They could be the last person home but still make up a team.

Bring packed lunch and plenty of water to drink.

(If anyone is buying spikes, the leather ones are best for the winter months as they will keep feet a little drier than the soft material ones. Dunboyne Sports stocks spikes and will order in sizes also 8251036. Blondelles will be stocking running tights and other athletics gear shortly 8257711)

Meath Primary Schools Cross Country Report from Sineád Drummond

We had a very enjoyable day, 48 students from Rathbeggan NS traveled to the primary schools’ cross country competition in Fr.Murphy's AC , Athboy, with many of the children competing for the first time in a cross country competition. It was well organized with a large turnout of up to 100 kids in each race. The track was very clearly laid out and the ground was in perfect condition, not a muddy puddle in sight, and thankfully the rain held off.
The boys and girls did themselves, their school and club very proud. The school had 8th kids in each race with all the students finishing their races and placing very well, all thanks to their Operation Transformation “Hero Teacher”, Ms. Mary Devine. She organized a cross-country league in the school over the last few months, keeping the kids very fit and able. (Special thanks to Ratoath AC coaches Gerry and Tom for coming to the school as guest race starters for Rathbeggans league final last month)

The first race of the day was the girls of 1st and 2nd class 400mtrs with Ratoath AC club new member Sarah Maher coming in 31st, Jasmine Murray doing very well also. The Boys of 1st & 2nd class 400mtrs had no Rataoth AC athlete in this race, but Rathbeggan’s Ronán Byrne (2nd class) came in 5th place. Next was the Girls 3rd & 4th class 600mtrs, with Orla Hayes (4th class) putting in a great race, coming in 5th. Caroline Murphy (3rd class) showing great heart in finishing well.
In the Boys 3rd & 4th - 600mtrs, Fionn Drummond (3rd class) ran a very strong race, coming in 11th and was Rathbeggans 1st boy home. Marcus Zaidan (3rd class) showing well for his first time in a cross-country race.
The 3rd & 4th class boys team came 3rd overall in the competition.

The older races had some very strong contenders
Girls 5th & 6th class - 800mtrs with Rathbeggan’s 1st home, Julie Crowe coming in 17th
Boys 5th & 6th class - 800mtrs had new club member Michael McHugh (6th class) 20th,and Kritsada Cooke 5th Class also finishing well.
The children all enjoyed the experience and a big thank you to Mr.Rushe and Ms.Devine for making the effort in bringing the school to the competition.

St.Pauls N.S 5th and 6th class also traveled to Athboy. Club members Rachael Doherty, Zara Kane, Emma McCamley, Harry Haskins, and Harry Bailey all competed for St. Paul's in the 5th and 6th class race over 800m with over 100 runners in the race. Well done to them all.

Successful and Enjoyable Cross Country Relays

Ratoath AC had a great turnout at this running of the 2010 Meath Cross Country Championships. We had 7 teams of 4 who all ran their very best for their Team and the Club and we as coaches are very proud of them all.
We medaled in the U12 Girls and the U16 boys with the girls winning Silver and the boys Bronze, and congratulations to them for some fine running.
For the other teams most of which came just outside the medals in very strong competition it was a day which they all enjoyed as they pushed themselves to their limits in overcoming the challenges of the 500m course.
Coach Susan Marron decided on the morning to enter the ladies race and ran well over the 3km hilly course, fair play to her.
Above is a picture of the U10 Boys and Girls more pictures from the day to follow.
For those who have want to keep going with the Cross Country running this is a reminder about the Meath Community Games Cross Country Trials which are on on the 20th March in Oldcastle Co.Meath. Details of which are in a post below this one, go check it out...

Meath Senior Cross Country and Juvenile Relays

The Meath Senior Cross Country and Juvenile Relays for 2010 will take place at Ardbracan on Sunday 6th March 2011.

Please note that the Juvenile Relays are based on 2010 age categories. e.g. Children born in 2001 (Under 11 this year) and 2002 can run in the under 10 relay as they were under 10 and under 9 last year. Children born in 2000 and 1999 can run in the Under 12 event, 1998,1997 Under 14 and 1996,1995 Under 16.

This is a cross country 4 X 250m or 4 X 500m relay that does not require a slick hand-over as is the case for 4 X 100m track relay. Baton exchange is same as for 400m track relay ie all receive in left and, change hands and hand over out of right hand 250 m for u 10 , u 12 and 500m for u 14 & u 16. Last years ages apply. Need to nominate a sub and get full commitment on availability from all athletes.

This is a great team event for our runners with much shorter distances to run than the standard cross country. However it is a Team Event that means if someone says they are going to be there and then does not turn up, the rest of the team does not run. So for the parents if you have said that you will bring your child to the event it is very important that you do turn up. If we get a good response we can have more than one team in each event.

Please note also that Athletes must be registered and as this this process takes over a week if you are not registered and want to compete get those forms to us ASAP.
Forms available for download here
