The All Ireland Club and County Relay Championships were held
yesterday in Tullamore. The weather again was glorious and the completion was
even hotter. We had our u13 girls club team competing in the U13 4 x 100m in
the morning session, the team consisting of Emma Coroner, Ivie Okome, Rachel
McPartlin and Aine Cooney put in a great display coming home 6th in
the final, their time of 55.45 was a new pb for the team and was over a second
faster than they ran at the Leinster Championships, the U13 girls event had one
of the most competitive fields in a long number of years and the girls time
would have placed them 3rd in this event last year. The event was
won by Dooneen in a time of 53.95s a new National record.
The girls were disappointed to miss out on the medals but
made up for it in the afternoon session, three of our club girls, Emma Coroner,
Ivie Okome and Aine Cooney combined with Tara Hedrington form Dunshaughlin to
make up the U13 Meath Relay team for the All Ireland County Competition, the
girls ran a great final and won in a time of 54.29s, ahead of Tipperary 2nd and
Mayo 3rd. This was a great achievement seen that they only finished
third in the Leinster Championships back in June, Congratulations to the girls
on winning their first All Ireland medals, well deserved after putting in a
great effort in training over the past 6 weeks.
Deirdre Healy was also in action on Sunday in the girls U17 1500m All Ireland final, the 1500m Race was very tactical early on with Deirdre in the lead at the bell but was out-sprinted over the last
lap by others including Louise Shanahan (Leevale) who recorded a winning time
of 4 min 51.7 sec.
Deirdre finished 7th in 5 min 4sec which was just outside her best. The calibre of the field can be gauged by the fact that Louise Shanahan is the 2013 EYOF 800m gold medalist. Nevertheless this was a great performance by Deirdre and bodes well for the upcoming cross country season.
