Report from Rathbeggan National School Cross Country League

The 10th Feb 2012 saw the 800mtrs Cross Country class and team league finals at Rathbeggan NS with 70% of second to sixth class students taking the option of joining in the competition organized by Deputy Principal Ms. Mary Devine.
Ratoath AC Members did very well: Fionn Drummond came 3rd  (2nd class race), Max Davenport 2nd, Kritsada Cooke 5th  (4th class race) and Diarmuid Mac Murchadha coming in 7th place in the 6th class race.
The school has also been running a cross country League competition over the last 4 weeks with seven teams consisting of eleven students in each team and having races every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Students gained points for their team in each race with Max's Team coming in 1st place, Fionn's team 2nd place, Kritsada 5th place and Diarmuid’s team coming in 7th place. Great fun and sportsmanship was shown on the day with all the Rathbeggan students getting involved, cheering on their friends and teammates.
If that wasn't fun enough the School is also participating in the Fit kids Marathon programme where the students are challenged to run a 40km Marathon by doing laps of the football pitch every day. At 250mtrs per lap the students can do as many laps as they feel capable of, building up to 160 laps on their charts. Children are challenged to run or walk the 40km over two months. They are given a Running chart where they colour in each lap they complete. This helps each child to focus on his or her goal, enabling them to see progress each day.
Ms.Devine and the principal Mr.Rushe have ignited the love for athletics in the students and awaking a talent they may not otherwise realized they had, and now many of them are looking to join local clubs such as Dunshaughlin AC and Ratoath AC to further enhance their abilities and enjoyment.

Special Thanks to Sineรกd Drummond for this great report and I hope these young athletes are looking at representing Ratoath and Rathbeggan Parish in the Meath community games cross country event (see post below).
